Cairoli wins Italian Motocross GP

Musquin and Cairoli keep the KTM GP clean sweep alive although Clement Desalle steals a moto win at Mantova.

Red Bull KTM’s Antonio Cairoli takes charge of the 2010 MX1 world championship chase by running 2-1 in Mantova to snatch the series leader’s red plate from under the nose of team-mate Max Nagl. As well as taking over the lead of the series Cairoli’s overall win also marks the first major overall victory for KTM’s ground-breaking 350.

Desalle’s 1-4 outscores Nagl’s 3-3 by three and ensures the Belgian Suzuki rider takes second place on the podium. Ken De Dycker ends the day fourth overall (4-5), Xavier Boog surprises many to run 7-6 to snatch fifth overall while KRT team-mate Jon Barragan snatches sixth ahead of Steve Ramon and David Philippaerts.

DP19 is particularly unlucky – he crashes while leading moto one then has his silencer and subframe break up when he’s on a charge back through the pack. Second in the day’s final moto is more like it but with 19-2 finishes he ends the day eighth overall just ahead of US import Jimmy Albertson.

In MX2 Jeffrey Herlings leads the second moto until the second to last corner where Marvin Musquin squeezes by for the win. That moto win is Marvin’s fourth in the series so far and the Frenchman now sits on a 14 point lead over Ken Roczen – who’s second – in the series standings. Roczen stands in the silver medal position on the podium with his 2-3 beating Herlings’ 6-2.

Zach Osborne ends the day fourth on his Bike-It Cosworth Yamaha courtesy of 5-5 results. There’s more good news for the team as both Mel Pocock and Edward Allingham score points too – the first of Allingham’s career.

British KTM riders Shaun Simpson and Jake Nicholls finish the day in seventh and eighth position overall. Simpson’s seventh comes from super-solid consistency from the Scotsman (7-8) while Nicholls goes a topsy-turvy 13-6.
